In a December 2015 Reader's Digest article, Danielle Groen states, "In the past 25 years, numerous scientific studies and reviews have shown us what exactly friends are for: they slash our risk of mortality in half, double our chances of recovering from depression…” Groen, D. (2015) Making Connections , Readers Digest ,December 2015, p.30

Like Groen, Affirmative Ventures recognizes friends are an important part of wellness. This belief is reflected in Affirmative Ventures' programming highlighted below.

Peer Group Activities
Walk About Program

Our "Walk About" program during employment training encourages able participants to walk 10,000 steps a day. This aids in developing workplace endurance and durability while promoting living a healthy lifestyle.

Financial Literacy

Financial literacy workshops are held at Affirmative House, any of our social enterprises, and other community locations and follow a module-based program.

Community Support Teams

Community Mental Health Teams include occupational therapists, social workers, psychologists, psychiatrists and nurses who work together to help participants manage and improve their mental health and well-being.

Teams work with individuals and discuss mental health concerns. Together, helpful "next steps" are decided and a plan is developed. Plans may include strategies or activities that participants and their support network can work on or an appointment with a psychiatrist to discuss medication options.
